The Earth System Modeling Framework Component Model -  its Design and Features from an AD Perspective

Abstract:  In this talk I will describe the design of a component model that is being used to develop large scale earth system modeling applications. Devised as part of the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF - see http://www.esmf.ucar.edu) project the ESMF component model hides a lot of dataflow and data dependency information behind high level abstractions. This is conveninet for Earth science researchers using ESMF as it hides component specific implementation details behind a common abstraction. However, the component abstraction may be challenging to AD tools that wish to reason about the dependencies between components. In the talk I will highlight some of the challenges that the ESMF component model may present for AD tools.
